Acne
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This blockage creates an environment where bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes, can thrive, leading to inflammation and the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes cysts or nodules.
Acne predominantly affects teenagers due to hormonal changes that increase oil production, but it can persist into adulthood. Factors such as genetics, diet, stress, and certain medications can also contribute to the development and severity of acne.
Treatment for acne varies depending on its severity. Mild cases can often be managed with over-the-counter topical treatments containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids. More severe cases may require prescription medications such as topical or oral antibiotics, retinoids, or hormonal treatments like birth control pills. In addition to medication, adopting a consistent skincare routine, avoiding the use of harsh products, and maintaining a healthy diet can help manage acne. In some cases, dermatological procedures like chemical peels, laser therapy, or drainage and extraction of cysts may be necessary. Regular consultation with a dermatologist is crucial for effectively managing and treating acne.
