Contact dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is a type of skin inflammation that occurs when the skin comes into direct contact with an irritant or allergen. This condition manifests as red, itchy, and sometimes painful rashes that can blister or become swollen.
There are two main types of contact dermatitis: irritant contact dermatitis, which is caused by direct damage to the skin by a substance, and allergic contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin has an allergic reaction to a substance. Common triggers include soaps, detergents, cosmetics, jewelry, and plants like poison ivy.
The treatment for contact dermatitis primarily involves identifying and avoiding the causative substance. Topical corticosteroids are often used to reduce inflammation and itching, while emollients can help soothe and protect the affected skin. In more severe cases, oral corticosteroids or antihistamines may be prescribed. Preventive measures include wearing protective clothing, using barrier creams, and opting for hypoallergenic products. With proper management, most cases of contact dermatitis resolve within a few weeks, though chronic cases may require ongoing care.
